NATALIE ERIKA JAMES

Natalie James is an award-winning Japanese-Australian writer/director with a booming career spanning film, episodic TV, commercials and music videos.

Her acclaimed first feature, RELIC, starring Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote and Robyn Nevin, was produced by Carver Films & Nine Stories (Jake Gyllenhaal & Riva Marker), and supported by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO.  RELIC premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews and was picked up by IFC in the US, and was recently awarded the coveted "Certified Fresh" label by Rotten Tomatoes.

Natalie is currently developing her second feature, DRUM WAVE, a Japanese folk tale based on her 2018 short that premiered at Fantastic Fest and was nominated for Best Short Film at the Sydney Film Festival.


Her 2016 short, CRESWICK, premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and won the 2017 AWGIE Award for Best Short Film screenplay by the Australian Writer’s Guild.

Natalie won Music Video of the Year at the 2015 Triple J Awards for the music video MINE by artist Life is Better Blonde.   

When not under a COVID-19 lockdown, she splits her time between Melbourne, New York and Los Angeles.
